Direct answer

Good care starts with listening.

Dunlap Family Dentistry provides preventive care, restorative treatment, tooth replacement, and urgent dental guidance for adults and families across Johnstown, Gloversville, and Fulton County. Good care starts with listening, so the first step is usually a straight conversation about what is going on and what you would like to do about it.

If your situation does not fit neatly, that is normal. Call the office and describe what is going on in your own words. You do not need the right terms. We will help you figure out the right appointment.

Preventive dentistry

Keep small things small.

Routine cleanings, thorough exams, X-rays when they are useful, and honest guidance about what to keep an eye on. Most patients follow a six-month recall, though we adjust the interval when your history calls for it.

Restorative dentistry

Fix what is failing. Keep what is sound.

Repair for teeth that are broken, decayed, worn, or previously restored and now failing. This includes fillings, crowns, bridges, and phased treatment plans for larger cases. We protect sound tooth structure when we can.

Dentures and partial dentures

Make room for normal again.

Full dentures, partial dentures, adjustments, relines, and replacements when an existing appliance no longer fits. We help you compare options against what your remaining teeth can support. If an implant-supported restoration is a better fit, we explain the coordination.

Urgent dental care

A tooth does not care what your week looks like.

Phone-first triage for pain, injuries, and lost restorations. Call the office and we will help you judge how quickly you should be seen and arrange the next available appointment. If your situation is beyond what a dental office can address safely, we will point you to the right place.

Cosmetic dentistry

Change what you notice in photographs.

Take-home whitening with custom trays, internal bleaching for a single tooth that darkened after a root canal, cosmetic bonding for chips and small gaps, and porcelain veneers when several front teeth need to change together. We will tell you what each option will and will not do before you commit to it.

Bite, jaw and sleep appliances

Grinding is the quiet reason dental work fails early.

Custom nightguards for clenching and grinding, fitted to your bite rather than to an average mouth. We also make and fit appliances for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea when your physician prescribes one. We do not diagnose sleep apnea.

What the first visit usually includes

A conversation before it is a procedure.

  1. We listen first. What brought you in, what you have been told before, what has worked, what has not, and what you would like to change.
  2. We examine carefully. A comfortable exam, appropriate X-rays, and a look at anything you are worried about.
  3. We explain what we see. In plain language, without a preloaded treatment plan.
  4. We decide together. Sometimes the answer is a cleaning and a follow-up. Sometimes it is a phased plan. Sometimes the answer is to keep an eye on it.

You are welcome to bring a partner, a family member, or a caregiver to your appointment.

Technology in the office

What the equipment is actually for.

Equipment is only worth naming if it changes something for you. Here is what we use and why it matters.

  • Digital X-rays. Less radiation than film, and the image is on the screen immediately instead of after processing.
  • Panoramic X-ray (Panorex). One wide image of both jaws, the sinuses, and the jaw joints. It is how we assess wisdom teeth, plan extractions, and plan for dentures.
  • Cone beam CT (CBCT). A three-dimensional scan for the times a flat image is not enough, such as planning around an implant or assessing a root that is difficult to read.
  • Intraoral camera. A small camera that puts a photograph of your own tooth on the screen, so you can see what we are describing instead of taking our word for it.
  • Digital intraoral scanner. A scan of your teeth that replaces the tray of impression material for many crowns, nightguards, and appliances.
  • Soft tissue laser. Used for certain gum procedures, often with less bleeding and a more comfortable recovery than the alternative.

How we handle cost

The bill should not be a surprise.

Cost belongs in the conversation from the start, not in a letter that arrives later. Before treatment begins, we walk through what the work involves and what to expect.

  • Estimates are based on the treatment we recommend, and we put them in writing before work begins.
  • We can usually break larger treatment into stages so you can pace the work.
  • We will tell you what needs attention now, what can wait, and what is optional.

If cost is a factor in your decision, tell us. That is useful information, not a burden.

What we do not claim

Trust is often what a practice declines to overstate.

  • We do not promise painless treatment. Discomfort varies.
  • We do not promise a specific timeline for how long a restoration will last.
  • We do not diagnose over the internet. If something is wrong, come in.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions.

Is Dunlap Family Dentistry accepting new patients?

Yes. We welcome new patients from Johnstown, Gloversville, Broadalbin, Amsterdam, and the surrounding Fulton County communities.

Do you place dental implants?

Our focus is on implant restorations. When surgical placement is part of your treatment, the choice of surgeon is yours, from a list we are comfortable recommending.

Can I be seen the same day if a tooth is hurting?

Same-day availability depends on the schedule that day. Call the office and describe what is happening. We will let you know how soon we can see you and walk you through what to do while you wait.

What if I have not been to the dentist in years?

You are welcome here. The chair is not a courtroom. We start with today and build a plan around what matters to you.

Where are you located?

Dunlap Family Dentistry is located at 310 Jansen Avenue in Johnstown, New York. A separate dental practice shares the address; look for the Dunlap Family Dentistry signage.

Do you offer teeth whitening or veneers?

Yes. We provide take-home whitening with custom trays, internal bleaching for a single darkened tooth, cosmetic bonding, and porcelain veneers. See our cosmetic dentistry page for what each option does.

Do you make nightguards for grinding?

Yes. We make custom nightguards fitted to your bite. We also make appliances for snoring and sleep apnea when your physician prescribes one, though we do not diagnose sleep apnea.

Do you offer sedation or nitrous oxide?

We do not provide sedation in the office. If dental anxiety is a significant barrier for you, we can ask your physician to prescribe an oral medication for you to take before your appointment. That prescription is a decision for your physician.

Do you see children?

Yes, children of all ages. What treatment we provide depends on the individual child, and we will tell you honestly if a pediatric specialist would be a better fit.

Do you do extractions and wisdom teeth?

We perform simple extractions, surgical extractions, and wisdom tooth removal case by case. Cases requiring sedation go to an oral surgeon, since we do not sedate in the office.
